Platinum Piwakawaka

(19 customer reviews)

Platinum Piwakawaka – RPM Discs is an up and coming company in the disc golf world. Hailing from New Zealand, these discs have a great look to them with really cool artwork feautring different birds native to New Zealand. The Piwakawaka is a slow midrange or a fast putter that holds any line you put it on. It gets plenty of glide and never strays off its line with turn or fade. Useful for powered down tee shots and approaching the green, you will love to have this slot filled in your bag. The Piwakawaka is a low profiled midrange with a rim width similar to a putter but with a beveled edge. It is a great feeling disc that is offered in a few different plastics so you are sure to find one that fits your game.

The Piwakawaka like all the other RPM discs are named after birds native to New Zealand. RPM says this about it: “Pīwakawaka is the Māori name for this energetic bird native to New Zealand, also called the Fantail. Known for its friendly ‘cheet cheet’ call and energetic flying antics, the aptly named fantail is one of the most common and widely distributed native birds on the New Zealand mainland.”

  1. Beautiful!

  2. Love the disc. I have several RPM discs, and their plastic is great.

  3. One of my favorite discs of all time. Great glide for the slower arm speed crowd. I can throw this as far as I can a driver, but with more accuracy. Also makes a great roller.

  4. Oh my! This disc is incredible! I have no idea how I felt comfortable with my bag before having a Piwakawaka or 2 in it! I am currently bagging one Cosmic and one Strata. The Cosmic Piwak is insanely straight. I know it sounds like I am just hyping the brand up but I have literally NEVER seen a disc fly like this one. You throw it soft on a little bit of hyzer and once it flips up to flat, it literally never deviates from that line. I have thrown a lot of discs that fly fairly straight for me but I have never seen one like this. The Piwak seems to glide until it runs out of spin instead of dumping down at the very tail end of the flight. You could literally be 200′ – 250′ out from someone throwing this disc and literally catch it in the air as it slows down at the end of its flight. I have yet to see another disc that does that and I work at a DG shop so I have thrown a ton of different molds. This disc is so perfect for hitting straight lines and small gaps. My Strata Piwakawaka is more understable than the Cosmic as expected with it being a baseline plastic. I would consider Strata to be more like a stiff KC Pro rather than a bottom of the line base plastic like DX. This thing has hit it’s fair share of trees and there are really no major chunks or gashes in it. I am a left handed player and I absolutely love taking out my Stata Piwak on a right to left turning hole. I put it on a slight hyzer and throw it soft and it will stand up and then start turning over. If I throw it just right it will just turn, turn, turn, instead of the normal turn and burn you get out of stable to understable mids. This disc has literally changed my game. In addition to it working out great for an intermediate level player like myself, this would be the absolute best disc in the entire disc golf market to put into a child or beginners hands. They will able to actually see a good straight flight out of this thing within the first round of disc golf. You can’t tell me we didn’t all want that during our first rounds. Grab yourself a couple Piwakawakas and I promise you won’t be disappointed. The last thing I would like to say before closing out my review on the Piwakawaka is GLIDE, GLIDE, GLIDE!!!!

  5. Love it!

  6. The Piwakawaka is a really nice disc, but its turn rating should not be 0. It’s at least -1, maybe -2. If you buy this disc expecting it to fly like a Mako3, I think you’ll be disappointed. I have a rather domey Atomic one, so perhaps the Cosmic ones are more stable, but mine flies significantly less stable than my Star Mako3. If you want to compare to Innova, it’s probably more like a Wombat (although I haven’t thrown a Wombat myself).

The Piwakawaka is great for beginners, anyone looking to improve their form, or more advanced players who want a super straight hyzerflip disc for the woods. It doesn’t take much power at all to get this disc going. Conversely, this disc really hates off-axis torque and is easily overpowered. If you try to crank on this disc with a power grip, it’s probably going to turn and burn. But if you give it a nice smooth pull with a little hyzer, you will be rewarded with a remarkably long, straight flight. That said, don’t throw this disc into any kind of headwind. It will flip and never come back.

Lastly, I don’t forehand this disc during rounds, but I think it’s a nice disc for improving your forehand technique during fieldwork. You will know if you give this disc any off-axis torque, because it will quickly turn into a roller. If you can forehand this disc effectively, you know you’re getting a smooth release with plenty of spin.

  7. Literally everyone needs a Piwakawaka in their bag. It is such a unique one of a kind disc. Try to find another disc with the ratings of 6, 6, -3, 0. You won’t haha. The reason I love it is because it’s SO easy to throw and one of the straightest discs ever. I’d say it’s more like 5, 7, -2, 0. PERFECT disc for beginners and Intermediate players to master their form with and carve up the woods with. Will hold the line you put it on. It’s kind of a cheat code to be honest. You point and shoot and it goes where you tell it to. Scott Stokeley raves about this disc. Whenever I meet new players trying to learn a backhand I give them a Piwakawaka and let their eyes light up when they throw it. Flips up to flat and glides for days. Even more advanced players, when they hold it in their hands they always say how good it feels. Overall a great mid range/slow fairway. Fun and easy to throw. Teaches smoothness, finesse and form. And glides so long.

  8. My favorite rpm disc, has a very unique flight, can shoot it out straight 150 feet and will just hold the light fading right (rhbh) the rest of the flight. Has a sneaky amount of glide. Have to control your power to use this effectivly.

  9. This is an awesome straight mid. I find it a little less flippy than an esp buzz but it still has very little low speed fade. Slightly sharper feel to the rim compared to most discs of this nature.

  10. In the cosmic, it’s noticeably dense/weighty. Not in a bad way, just distinctive. Lovely to look at as well. As others have noted, it’s dead straight. You really have to tell it to do anything else. Otherwise, it finds flat pretty quickly and is perfectly content to hang there. Bought with a Ruru as a guest/friend pair and I think they’ll be perfect. In the midrange, I have an Origin that tends to the left, a Fuse that tends to the right, and this one right up the center.
